My Airboat

Research Report

This research report is on airboats. It’s a lot of fun to ride in them if you know how to drive them. There are also a lot of safety rules you have to be aware of or your boat might capsize or sink.

There are different styles for airboats. Some have deck over’s which means the hull is airtight. Or some just have a partial deck over-some have no deck. A lot of airboats give character for those who want to have custom paint jobs and stuff. Other people may want to build an airboat on their own. But most people just buy one the way it is.

Airboats are pushed by a prop which thrust a lot of air. Some are really loud but others aren’t so loud. That’s because of the prop’s blade. It depends on how many blade it has. Some have 2 and some have 12 or some have two props that are counter rotating. It really all depends on what you want.

The engine in an airboat is very similar to a car engine. But this doesn’t turn axles it turn a prop. An airboat engine can be a 4 or 6 cylinders. These, wonderful, engines are preferred because you can find replacement parts for it and it’s lighter than most car engines.

As you can see airboats are the greatest creation ever made. A prop whirling is something that is very cool to see.

Materials
  • 23 in. long 12 in. wide 3 ½ in. deep of aluminum plate
  • Grinder
  • Welding Machine
  • Chop Saw
  • Jig Saw
  • Brake
  • Wooden prop
  • Wire strippers
  • Flux
  • Sater gun
  • Electric Motor
  • Wires
  • Battery
  • Wire Connector Drill
  • U bolt
  • Screws
  • 4 pieces of 5½ in. angle iron
  • 3½ in. piece of angle iron
  • 30in. piece of flat iron
  • Green Spray paint

How to make an airboat model
First I got a 23in. sheet of aluminum and a 29in. sheet of aluminum which were both 11in. wide and bent the 29in. sheet to equal the other. Then got 2 more 29in. sheets of aluminum that were 3 ½ in. wide and put them next to the first sheet and traced the curve with a marker and cut it out. Then welded all 4 of the pieces together the make the hull. Soon after that I spray painted my hull with green paint. After that we put a U bolt over the electric motor which was bolted to a 3½ in. piece of angle iron. Then we bolted that to 2 pieces of 5½ in. of angle iron which I bolted to 2 more angle iron pieces that were 5½ in. long. Then I bolted those to the center of the boat. Finally I took a 30in. piece of flat iron an bent it to fit on the boat and bolted it down.
